Dragonite Train Derailed

Dragonite-Themed Train Derailed by Boulder in Fukui Prefecture, Japan

In an unusual accident early on March 2nd, a Dragonite-themed train traveling on the Katsuyama-Eiheiji Line in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, derailed after colliding with a two-meter-wide boulder near the tracks.

No Serious Injuries Reported

The accident occurred at 5:26 AM JST near Hijima Station as the train was en route between Katsuyama City and Fukui City. Fortunately, the two passengers aboard the lead train car were unharmed, while the conductor suffered only a minor knee injury. The train itself sustained a broken window and exterior damage.

A Train with a Special Mission

The two-car Dragonite train is part of Pokémon Local Acts, a program aimed at promoting regional tourism in Japan. Dragonite was selected as Fukui Prefecture’s Ambassador Pokémon in late 2023, inspired by the area’s many dragon-related geographical names, such as the Kuzuryu River (which translates to “Nine-Headed Dragon River”). The themed train began operating in Summer 2024 to encourage tourism.

Service Disruptions and Investigation Underway

As of 3 PM JST, service on the Katsuyama-Eiheiji Line remained disrupted, with no official estimate for when operations would resume. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to send an inspector to the scene later on March 2nd to assess the situation and determine the cause of the derailment.

For now, Pokémon fans and local commuters will have to wait for further updates on when the Dragonite train will return to service.
