The Pokémon Company Announces “Pokecology” Encyclopedia

The Pokémon Company has unveiled an exciting new project that blends science with fandom — a brand-new picture book titled the “Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia”, or Pokecology for short.

Set to release in Japan on June 18th, 2025, this book dives deep into the speculative ecology of over 1,000 wild Pokémon, offering fans a fresh and imaginative look at how Pokémon might interact with their environments if they were real-life creatures.

Science Meets Pokémon

The encyclopedia is written by Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrated by Kinoshita Chihiro, both of whom are researchers at the Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo. Their expertise brings a fascinating scientific lens to the Pokémon world, with imagined ecosystems, natural behaviors, and environmental dynamics that feel incredibly grounded — even for a world full of Fire-types and floating ghosts.

This isn’t your typical Pokédex. Pokecology aims to explore things like:

  • How certain Pokémon would survive in their native habitats
  • Predator-prey relationships between species
  • Natural camouflage, migration, and breeding behaviors
  • Unique ecological niches filled by fan-favorites and lesser-known Pokémon alike

Already Sold Out

Despite only just being announced, pre-orders across all six major Japanese retailers have already sold out — a testament to just how hotly anticipated this release is among fans and collectors alike. It’s safe to say this book will be one of the most sought-after pieces of Pokémon literature in recent memory.

If you’re hoping to grab a copy, keep an eye on resellers and second-hand listings — though let’s hope prices don’t skyrocket into scalper territory. Fingers crossed for a wider international release or reprint in the future.
