Pokémon Unite Announces Major Updates: License Points, Rank System Overhaul, and More
The Pokémon Company has shared a new Producer Letter outlining major upcoming changes for Pokémon Unite — including a full replacement of Aeos Coins, a revamped ranking system, map changes, and improvements to experience distribution. Here’s everything confirmed so far.
License Points Replace Aeos Coins
- On December 4, 2025, Aeos Coins will no longer be used to purchase Unite Licenses. Instead, a License Points system will be implemented.
- Players can exchange their existing Aeos Coins for License Points at a rate of 10 Aeos Coins → 1 License Point.
- The number of License Points needed per Unite license will vary widely, between 325 and 1,960, depending on the specific Pokémon license.
- After December 4, players can also use License Points to buy other items in the Aeos Coin Exchange, including fashion items and Holowear, not just licenses.
Ranking System Revamp
- Starting after the December 4 update, Unite’s rank progression will use a gauge system:
- Players earn rank points from matches, which fill up their Rank Gauge.
- Rank points will be awarded not just for winning or losing, but also based on performance — such as dealing high damage or making game-changing plays.
- A new top-tier rank, Legend, will be added above the existing Master rank.
- This change aims to better reward different playstyles and contributions, regardless of a player’s chosen role.
Updates to Theia Sky Ruins Map
- The Theia Sky Ruins battlefield will be significantly updated: map layout changes, new tall grass zones, and a shift in how players navigate terrain.
- The Legendary monster that appears around the 8-minute mark will change to Kyogre, and defeating it grants a team-wide effect: continuous HP regeneration + a boost to scoring goals.
- This effect is tailored to complement playstyles like All-Rounders and Defenders, and is expected to shift team strategies.
Experience (EXP) Distribution Changes
- A new EXP system is coming on December 18, 2025:
- EXP earned from defeating wild Pokémon with teammates will be shared equally among all group members, regardless of who dealt the final blow.
- The total team EXP for defeating wild Pokémon in a group will be higher than solo, emphasizing cooperative play.
- Because of this update, the Exp. Share mechanic will be removed: it will no longer affect how EXP is distributed.
Quality-of-Life and Teamplay Improvements
Future additions are planned to increase teamwork and social features:
- A “play again with the same team” button will be added to the battle results screen so you can queue into another match with your previous teammates.
- In Ranked matches at Master rank and above, players will be able to invite teammates to voice chat during champion selection.
- A new quick chat system will let players send teammates preset messages like “Great teamwork!” or “Well played!” at the end of each match.
Why These Changes Matter
These updates are among the most significant in Unite’s history — reshaping not only how players earn and spend license-related currency, but also how they progress and interact in the competitive environment. Key points:
- The switch from Aeos Coins to License Points represents a major shift in currency management.
- The new ranking system rewards performance more fairly than before.
- Map and EXP changes are designed to encourage cooperative play and more dynamic team strategies.
- New social features cater to both competitive and casual players by making replays and communication more accessible.
These changes reflect Unite’s ongoing evolution and The Pokémon Company’s commitment to balance, community, and competitive integrity. Fans should keep an eye out for the December updates — they’re poised to change how the game feels at higher levels.
