Pokémon TCG Japan Reveals “Abyss Eye” Expansion Featuring Mega Darkrai ex
The Pokémon Company has officially revealed the next Japanese Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion set, titled “Abyss Eye”, launching in Japan on May 22nd, 2026.
The new set heavily focuses on Darkness-type Pokémon and introduces the terrifying new Darkrai Mega Evolution from the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega-Dimensional Rush expansion.

Mega Darkrai ex Leads the Set
The headline card of the expansion is Mega Darkrai ex, whose signature attack “Abyss Eye” gives the set its name.
Mega Darkrai ex specialises in spreading Special Conditions before instantly knocking out opposing Pokémon trapped in weakened states.

One of the key combo cards shown so far is:
- Malamar
- Dark Bell Trainer card

The strategy revolves around confusing the opponent’s Active Pokémon before using Mega Darkrai ex’s “Abyss Eye” attack to immediately knock them out. Even powerful Mega Evolution ex Pokémon can fall instantly if caught under a status condition.
Mega Darkrai ex Attacks
Night Raid
- Deals extra damage if any Benched Pokémon already have damage counters
Abyss Eye
- If the opponent’s Active Pokémon is affected by a Special Condition, it is instantly Knocked Out
Like other Mega Evolution ex cards, Mega Darkrai ex gives up three Prize Cards when defeated.
Darkness-Type Pokémon and Fossil Cards Included
The set also introduces a number of other Darkness-themed cards and fossil Pokémon.
Confirmed cards so far include:
- Zarude
- Chi-Yu
- Nickit
- Thievul
- Mega Excadrill ex
- Rampardos ex
A new “Shadow Energy” card has also been revealed, supporting Darkness-type strategies.
Japan-Only Release… For Now
“Abyss Eye” is currently confirmed as a Japanese-exclusive release launching May 22nd, with booster packs containing five random cards.
However, international fans likely will not need to wait too long.
Multiple reliable Pokémon TCG sources report that the English version of the set is expected to release as “Pitch Black” later in 2026, with a projected launch around July 17th, 2026.
Reports suggest the English set will be almost identical to Abyss Eye, making Mega Darkrai ex one of the next major chase cards for Western collectors as well.
A Darker Direction for the Mega Evolution Era
With “Abyss Eye,” the Pokémon TCG appears to be leaning deeper into darker themes inspired by the Mega-Dimensional Rush DLC storyline.
Honestly, this set already feels like one collectors are going to go crazy for — especially with Mega Darkrai ex finally making its full TCG debut.
