Pokémon TCG Pocket Teases Dual-Type Cards and Starter Pokémon ex for October
Pokémon TCG Pocket is about to make one of its biggest changes yet, with Dual-Type Pokémon cards officially coming to the mobile game from October 2026.
The Pokémon Company revealed the news during PokémonXP, teasing a brand-new Mega Mewtwo X ex card that will be both Psychic- and Fighting-type.
But that’s not all. The same upcoming update will also introduce First Partner Pokémon as ex cards, giving some of the franchise’s classic starters a powerful new form.
Mega Mewtwo X ex Will Be the First Dual-Type Card
The first Dual-Type card shown is Mega Mewtwo X ex.
Rather than being assigned a single type like Pokémon in the current version of TCG Pocket, Mega Mewtwo X ex will simultaneously be:
Psychic-type
Fighting-type
This marks the first time Dual-Type Pokémon have appeared in Pokémon TCG Pocket.
The Pokémon TCG has used Dual-Type cards before in its physical card game, but bringing the mechanic into Pocket could have some interesting consequences for deck building and battles.
Exactly how every existing card interaction will work with Dual-Type Pokémon has not yet been fully explained, so we’ll have to wait for more information from The Pokémon Company before knowing just how much this will change the game.
Starter Pokémon Are Getting the ex Treatment
Alongside Mega Mewtwo X ex, The Pokémon Company also teased a new category of cards featuring First Partner Pokémon as Pokémon ex.
Two examples have already been shown:
Piplup ex
Fuecoco ex
The announcement indicates these are just the beginning, with more First Partner Pokémon expected to follow.
That could mean we will eventually see Pokémon such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Treecko, Mudkip, Turtwig and many more receive powerful ex versions.
For collectors, this could become a particularly fun series to complete.
A Big Change for Pokémon TCG Pocket
Dual-Type cards could have a noticeable impact on how players build their decks.
Until now, Pokémon TCG Pocket has kept Pokémon to a single type. Introducing Pokémon that can belong to two types opens up new possibilities for type-based strategies and could allow certain Pokémon to interact with support cards from more than one type.
Mega Mewtwo X ex is therefore an especially interesting choice to introduce the mechanic with, given its natural association with both Psychic and Fighting types.
We’ll need to see the final card and rules before knowing exactly how its dual typing will work in every situation.
Coming in October 2026
The new Dual-Type cards and First Partner Pokémon ex cards will begin arriving in October 2026 as part of the next wave of Pokémon TCG Pocket content.
The Pokémon Company has not yet revealed the complete lineup, meaning there are plenty more cards for us to discover between now and October.
The announcement follows the release of several major Pokémon TCG Pocket expansions throughout 2026, including Ruler of the Skies, which introduced Mega Rayquaza ex, and Team Rocket’s Ambition, which puts the spotlight on the infamous Pokémon villainous organisation.
Pokémon TCG Pocket Is Changing Again
The introduction of Dual-Type cards is a pretty significant step for Pokémon TCG Pocket.
After nearly two years of single-type Pokémon, players will soon have to consider cards that can belong to two types at once, while the arrival of First Partner Pokémon ex adds another new collecting and battling opportunity.
And if Mega Mewtwo X ex is only the beginning, it will be interesting to see just how many Pokémon eventually receive the Dual-Type treatment.
