Pokémon TCG Looks to the Future With YOSHIROTTEN’s Futuristic Rare Cards
The Pokémon Trading Card Game is celebrating 30 years of incredible artwork and memorable cards, but its anniversary isn’t just about looking back.
As part of the upcoming Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration expansion, The Pokémon Company is looking toward the future with a collection of Futuristic rare cards illustrated by renowned Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN.
A new video interview gives fans a closer look at the artist’s creative vision and the inspiration behind his work on the special anniversary cards.
YOSHIROTTEN Talks Pokémon TCG
In the newly released interview, YOSHIROTTEN sits down with Satoru Nagaya, Art Director at Creatures Inc., to discuss his approach to creating artwork for the Pokémon TCG.
The conversation explores the influences behind YOSHIROTTEN’s distinctive artistic style and how that style was adapted for the Futuristic rare cards being introduced as part of the 30th Celebration expansion.
The video also showcases some of YOSHIROTTEN’s previous artistic projects, giving fans an opportunity to see how his creative background has influenced his work on Pokémon.
Mew ex and Mewtwo ex Get a Futuristic Makeover
Two of the standout cards featured in the interview are Mew ex and Mewtwo ex.
The cards use YOSHIROTTEN’s distinctive visual approach, with the special treatment extending beyond the artwork itself. The video gives fans a closer look at the full textures and foil effects used on the cards.
It’s a very different look from the traditional Pokémon TCG artwork, making these cards particularly interesting for collectors who enjoy the artistic side of the hobby.
Basic Energy Cards Are Getting the YOSHIROTTEN Treatment Too
YOSHIROTTEN’s artwork isn’t limited to Pokémon.
The Basic Energy cards included in 30th Celebration will also receive a special foil treatment featuring his artwork.
The expansion contains multiple Basic Energy designs, with the interview showing off the different artwork and textures.
Interestingly, these Energy cards aren’t exclusive to the PokémonXP event. The cards being handed out at PokémonXP are the same Basic Energy cards that will appear in the 30th Celebration expansion.
A Special PokémonXP Giveaway
There is also a chance for fans attending PokémonXP in San Francisco to get their hands on one of the special Energy cards early.
From August 28–30, 2026, visitors to the Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration booth at PokémonXP can receive one foil Basic Energy card at random, while supplies last.
The cards are being distributed at random, so fans won’t know which Energy type they’ll receive until they get one.
And importantly, there is no difference between the PokémonXP giveaway versions and the Basic Energy cards that will be included in the retail expansion.
30 Years of Pokémon TCG Artwork
The YOSHIROTTEN cards are part of a much larger celebration of the Pokémon TCG’s history.
For three decades, Pokémon cards have featured an enormous range of artistic styles, from traditional illustrations to digital artwork, 3D renders, unusual photography and experimental designs.
The 30th Celebration expansion is using its anniversary to celebrate that history while also experimenting with what Pokémon TCG artwork can look like in the future.
YOSHIROTTEN’s Futuristic rare cards are arguably one of the best examples of that idea.
Rather than simply recreating the look of older Pokémon cards, the designs embrace a more contemporary and futuristic aesthetic.

September 16, 2026!
Fans attending PokémonXP from August 28–30 will have the opportunity to receive one of the special foil Basic Energy cards ahead of the expansion’s release, while supplies last.
For collectors, the expansion is shaping up to be an important release, not only because it celebrates 30 years of the Pokémon TCG, but because it brings together artwork celebrating the past with artists such as YOSHIROTTEN helping to imagine its future.
