Pokémon Mega Festa 2026 in Seoul Overwhelmed by Massive Crowds and Safety Concerns

Pokémon Korea officially launched Pokémon Mega Festa 2026 in Seoul this week as part of Pokémon’s ongoing 30th anniversary celebrations — but the event quickly descended into chaos after enormous crowds flooded the area on opening day.

The event transformed parts of:

  • Seoul Forest
  • Seongsu-dong

into large Pokémon-themed zones packed with attractions, themed installations, merchandise, and promotional activities.

Overnight Lines and Massive Crowd Surge

According to local reports, fans began lining up overnight and from early morning in order to secure exclusive event rewards and promotional items.

By midday, estimates suggested approximately 40,000 people had flooded into the area surrounding the event.

Major attractions included:

  • “Pokémon Secret Forest”
  • “Ditto Playground”
  • Pokémon stamp rally activities
  • Pokémon Trading Card Game promotions

One of the biggest draws was a limited promotional Magikarp Pokémon card tied to the stamp rally event.

Event Suspended Over Safety Concerns

As crowds continued growing throughout the morning, authorities reportedly began receiving overcrowding concerns from around 10:39 AM local time.

Videos and photos shared across social media showed packed streets and extremely dense crowds, with some users describing the atmosphere as:

“dangerous”
“chaotic”
“like a riot”
“a zombie outbreak”

Police vehicles were reportedly dispatched to help manage the situation as conditions worsened.

Due to safety concerns, Pokémon Korea temporarily suspended major parts of the event, including:

  • Stamp rally tours
  • Promo card distribution
  • Access to themed zones

Pokémon Korea later released an official statement explaining the suspension was necessary:

“Due to safety concerns caused by large crowds.”

Magikarp Promo Distribution Moved Online

The planned on-site distribution of the Magikarp promotional card was eventually cancelled.

Instead, Pokémon Korea announced the card distribution would move to an online registration system, with further details to be shared through official social media channels later.

Unfortunately, reports quickly surfaced claiming scalpers had already begun reselling the card online for approximately:

  • 25,000–33,000 yen

almost immediately after the event shutdown.

Fans Criticise Event Organisation

Many fans online criticised the organisers for:

  • Poor crowd management
  • Insufficient preparation
  • Holding such a large-scale event in a relatively compact area of Seoul

Some attendees also expressed frustration after waiting overnight only to have activities cancelled once safety concerns escalated.

Honestly, the footage coming out of Seoul looked genuinely intense. Pokémon events always pull huge crowds in Asia, but this feels like another reminder that Pokémon’s popularity right now is reaching levels organisers may still be underestimating — especially during the franchise’s 30th anniversary year.
